Keys, Legends, and Symbols in Maps
Just as maps help us find our way around unfamiliar places, keys and legends help us navigate unfamiliar maps. This helpful volume uses clear, easy-to-follow text to teach kids how to use a map's legend or key to figure out what the symbols on it mean. It presents commonly used symbols, such as the stars showing capital cities. The book also explains how certain types of maps, such as USGS topographic maps, employ standardized sets of symbols.

Book Review: Keys, Legends, and Symbols in Maps
"This book would be most useful in an intermediate or junior high geography class because it gives a detailed explanation on how to use keys, legends, and symbols in maps. The information seems accurate and is accompanied by various colorful photographs and illustrations. I like how the words in the glossary can be found easily (bolded) in the text. Also, the link to PowerKids Press website is updated regularly with an online list of additional Internet links related to the subject of this book."
